1. Why a Newsletter?

We just felt we need to improve communication between the
development team and the users. This Newsletter will not be very
regular. From time to time, we expect to write one when an important
event occurs or when we'll have something to say.

Expect some regular features like:
   "Contribute!"
      what kind of help we need;
   "Tips and Tricks"
      some tips on using JDistro, directly from the coders;
   "What's happening"
      an overview of the current development in JDistro;
   "Re:News"
a way for you to submit some replies or news (related to JDistro
of course -- please send messages to:
      feedback-newsletter@jdistro.com

2. Contribute!

Do you want to review this newsletter before publishing? Do you
want to translate it in other languages? We would welcome your help.

3. JDistro 2nd Dev. Meeting

The 18th of August has seen the once-in-a-year development
meeting. It has taken place in Senlis, a city near Paris, France.
http://www.ville-senlis.fr/

All of the main developpers were there and we had a good lunch and
good talks too. Guillaume talked about a v1.0 in 2005 and what we need
to do to get there. He said we need to complete all the current
modules (and he will try not to add new ones).

Specifically the security system needs to be rewritten to allow
better configuration by the users. Gerard (that's me) talked a lot
(as always) and sometimes it was about JDistro. He said it's a
pleasure to write most of the online catalog of applications, but he
will be happy to end it and return to java coding!

Overall that was a good meeting, working using internet is fine but
nothing's better than see people alive. Next meeting let's expect
someone will think to take pictures.

4. What's happening?

Work is well underway for the catalog of online application.
Expect some good changes in the future, like the possibility to edit
an existing application, user protection by using login/password and
screenshots of the applications!
http://www.jdistro.com/catalog/

For JDistro itself, besides the usual fixes, work is progressing
slowly in the code. This was mainly due to the preparation of the
JDistro BOF at JavaOne [1], the hard drive failure of the server and
hard work (to earn real money) to do.

5. Tips and Tricks

** What is the Wharf or Korte Mode?

JDistro normal execution is to embed all the applications into its
desktop. This is the "Korte Mode". To do so, it changes the way these
applications behave by modifying directly the code inside them.
Unfortunately, some applications don't like these changes and don't
work well in this mode. So we designed another mode, named the "Wharf
Mode", in which all applications run in their own window, thus we
don't need to change much code inside them.

If some of your beloved Java application don't work in JDistro
desktop, you can try the more compatible "Wharf Mode" by checking
"Wharf" in the "Startup" tab of the preferences ialog box. Don't
forget to restart JDistro for your change to take effect.

6. Re:News

Feel like you have something to say to the JDistro community of
users/developpers? You can send us a message or a news at
feedback-newsletter@jdistro.com and the best ones will be published
here!

7. Disclaimer

You received this newsletter because you have enrolled to the
jdistro-devel or jdistro-user mailing-lists.
